The Most Common Types of CT Insurance Plans

There’s a wide choice of CT insurance plans available to residents of the state and they typically differ in how they work and what they cover. If you understand the difference between these health care plans it may make your choice a little bit easier.

  • Fee for service. This is also known as indemnity insurance. Basically, you pay a specific fee each time you use a service and visit a health care provider. There aren’t any provider networks in place so you’re free to visit any medical professional and doctor you prefer. The health insurance plan will cover a portion of the fee and you’ll be responsible for the rest of it as well as your usual monthly premium. These types of plans generally feature yearly deductibles.
  • Rhode island health insuranceHealth Maintenance Organizations (HMO). This popular plan is basically a prepaid health insurance policy that charges monthly premiums. The plan will provide you with comprehensive health care through a network of health care providers that you’re encouraged to use. If you’re faced with an emergency though, you’re allowed to visit a health care provider outside of the insurer’s network. In general, a copayment is involved each time you visit the doctor or other medical professional. You’re also asked to choose a primary care physician (PCP) who you visit first with any health concerns. If you don’t choose a PCP then the insurance company usually assigns one to you.
  • Point-of-Service (POS). Many HMO’s also offer a system known as point-of-service. Your PCP typically refers network members over to other doctors and physicians who belong to the network. You’re also allowed to seek medical attention without a referral outside of your network, but if you do, you’ll need to pay coinsurance.
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO). A preferred provider organization is typically a combination of fee-for-service and HMO health plans. You’re asked to visit doctors and medical establishments that belong to the insurer’s network and it usually costs you a small copayment fee for some medical services. You still have to choose a PCP, but you’ll be able to receive medical help outside of your network for a fee.
