In the study, results were based from a five-year study which showed how the difference in life expectancy for people from deprived areas in 2000 was 6.5 years less than those from the most affluent areas had reduced to 4.2 years in 2005. In 2000, this difference was most noticeable from deprived areas wherein the men's life expectancy improved by 4.7 years compared to that of the women's to 2.2 years.

For the researchers, this catching up of the unhealthy ones is rising at three times the rate of people living in more affluent areas has been brought about by the availability of health care and a decrease in violent deaths in Brazil. In addition, as some more developed countries are finding widening gaps in life expectancy, this example from Brazil may point the way towards parity in life expectancy between the sexes, and between the poor and disadvantaged, and the rich and comfortable.
