Also, about 80% of the group was also on other medications for COPD. Both groups continued taking other medications such inhaled steroids and bronchodilators. However, those with heart ailments were not to take part in the study.

According to the researchers, to be able to participate in the said study, one must be in the late sixties and must have a history of oxygen usage or reported having one of these flare-ups in the previous year. The antibiotic reduced flare-ups by about 20% compared to placebo. At the one-year mark, those in the placebo group had an average of 1.83 flare-ups, but those in the antibiotic group had 1.48 only. Also, during the study, there were 156 hospitalizations for the antibiotic group and 200 for the placebo group.

Furthermore, the group pointed out that although the antibiotics are readily available, it had downsides such as hearing loss. The good thing is that only a percent was the difference between those who took the drug and the placebo. On the other hand, the antibiotic-resistant microbes in some patients increased but no one got an infection during the study. It was also highlighted in the study that the regimen would only be meant for those with moderate to severe COPD who require supplemental oxygen or who have a history of flare-ups.
